La familia De Smet: los primeros misioneros de UME en Argentina.
Fue por 1956 que llegó a Río Gallegos la primera familia misionera de UME, Wally & Mary Lou De Smet (EEUU), con el fin de evangelizar la Patagonia que en esa época había recibido poco y nada de esfuerzo evangelístico. A partir de ese inicio, se fueron agregando obreros al esfuerzo, especialmente en la provincia de Sta. Cruz. Entre los primeros en llegar fueron las familias Palfeneir, Harder, y Morán, que con el correr de los años fueron seguidos por los Bart, Holmes, Remley y Kasper entre otros. El resultado de su esfuerzo fue la formación de iglesias en varias localidades del Sur Argentino, las cuales fueron unidas a una denominación hermana ya existente.
En la actualidad tenemos iglesias y lugares de predicación en Capital Federal, el Gran Buenos Aires, Provincias de Buenos Aires, Santa Cruz, Chubut, San Juan, y Catamarca. Siguen en vigencia planes de expansión y crecimiento, ya que con el desarrollo de la confusión reinante de iglesias, sectas, y grupos religiosos, la necesidad de una denominación como UME crece a diario.
Integrar una congregación de UME implica formar parte de algo mucho más amplio y de mayor envergadura de lo que aparenta a simple vista. Es una “hermandad” de grupos de iglesias y de obreros que intentan realizar lo que su nombre implica...... ser una “Unión” de personas e iglesias cuyo fin es “Misionero” y a su vez “Evangélico”, o sea totalmente basada en el evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
Con el correr de los años fueron entrando a la entidad que nucleaba a las iglesias fundadas, corrientes doctrinales y de práctica que no concordaban con las de UME, y después de un arduo esfuerzo por enderezar el rumbo de la asociación, los misioneros de UME vieron como alternativa más viable apartarse de la asociación y formar un ente nuevo. Esto sucedió el 2 de Agosto de 1990 cuando se formó la “Asociación Civil Unión Misionera Evangélica”. Al momento de nacer, UME consistía de un conjunto de seis parejas misioneras y una de obreros nacionales, casi todos a cargo de pequeñas obras misioneras en gestación, incluyendo una en Rafael Calzada, una en Bahía Blanca, una en Trelew y dos en San Juan.
